Problem

A pendulum of length 1.5 m has a bob of mass 200 g. It is released from rest after being displaced so that the string makes a maximum angle of 8° with the vertical. (i) Determine the maximum linear displacement of the bob from equilibrium along the arc. (ii) Using the small-angle approximation, calculate the magnitude of the maximum restoring force acting on the bob.
