Problem

A car moves on a straight road that coincides with the x–axis. Its motion is recorded with reference to a fixed origin O on the road. (i) The car starts from x1=−40 mx_1=-40\,\text{m} and reaches x2=−10 mx_2=-10\,\text{m} in 4 s4\,\text{s}. Calculate its displacement for this interval. (ii) Without pausing, the car then moves to x3=+30 mx_3=+30\,\text{m} in the next 6 s6\,\text{s}. Determine its displacement during this second interval. (iii) Find the total displacement of the car for the entire 10 s10\,\text{s} journey. (iv) Compute the total distance travelled and compare its magnitude with that of the total displacement.
