Problem
(i) Starting from the definition of momentum, derive an expression relating the net external force acting on a body of constant mass to the change in its velocity over a given time interval.
(ii) A freight trolley has to be accelerated from rest to a speed of 15ms−1 in 8s on a horizontal friction-free track. The engine that pushes the trolley can exert a constant force of 600N. Calculate the maximum mass (including load) the trolley may have so that the target speed is just achieved in the given time.
(iii) If the actual mass of the loaded trolley is 700kg, find the speed it will reach in 8s when acted upon by the same engine force.
