Problem

Two stars, P and Q, are found to have surface temperatures of 3500 K and 10 000 K respectively. (i) Without carrying out any numerical calculation, state which of the two stars has the longer wavelength corresponding to maximum emission. Give a brief reason. (ii) Describe the expected colour appearance of each star on the basis of their surface temperatures. (iii) Explain in two or three sentences how the temperature–wavelength relationship helps astronomers classify stellar types.
