Problem

A school bag of mass 2.5 kg2.5\,\text{kg} is placed on the top shelf of a cupboard 1.6 m1.6\,\text{m} above the floor. (i) Calculate the gravitational potential energy of the bag with respect to the floor. Take g=9.8 m s−2g=9.8\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}. (ii) The owner wants the same bag to possess 100 J100\,\text{J} more gravitational potential energy than the value obtained in part (i). Find the height above the floor at which the bag should now be placed. (iii) Another bag of mass 3.0 kg3.0\,\text{kg} is placed at the height found in part (ii). Compare its gravitational potential energy with that of the first bag by finding the ratio of the two energies.
