Problem

Two smooth spheres collide along a straight line. Sphere PP has mass 1.0 kg1.0\,\text{kg} and initial speed 4.0 m s−14.0\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}, while sphere QQ has mass 2.0 kg2.0\,\text{kg} and initial speed 1.0 m s−11.0\,\text{m\,s}^{-1} in the same direction as PP. After the impact their speeds are observed to be 2.0 m s−12.0\,\text{m\,s}^{-1} (sphere PP) and 2.5 m s−12.5\,\text{m\,s}^{-1} (sphere QQ), both along the original line of motion. (a) Verify whether linear momentum of the two-sphere system is conserved during the collision. (b) Calculate the coefficient of restitution for the impact. (c) Classify the collision as elastic, inelastic, or perfectly inelastic.
