Problem

A bar magnet may be treated as a magnetic dipole of moment 0.50 A m20.50\,\text{A\,m}^2. It is placed in a uniform magnetic field of magnitude 0.20 T0.20\,\text{T}. (i) Calculate the work that must be done to rotate the dipole from an initial orientation θ1=180∘\theta_1 = 180^{\circ} to a final orientation θ2=0∘\theta_2 = 0^{\circ} with respect to the field. (ii) The same magnet is now released from rest when its axis makes an angle of 60∘60^{\circ} with the field. Find the kinetic energy gained by the magnet when it reaches the position θ=0∘\theta = 0^{\circ}.
