Problem

A wooden block slides over a rough horizontal table. The table exerts a kinetic-friction force on the block throughout its motion. (i) Explain why mechanical energy is not conserved for the block–table system after the block begins to slide. (ii) State the relation between the work done by kinetic friction over a displacement dd and the corresponding change in kinetic energy of the block.
