Problem
An egg-catching demonstration is performed twice. In each trial a student throws a raw egg of mass 0.060kg horizontally toward a classmate at 7.0ms−1. The catcher brings the egg to rest without allowing it to break.
• Trial 1: the catcher holds her hands rigid so the egg comes to rest in approximately 0.020s.
• Trial 2: the catcher moves her hands backward while catching so the egg comes to rest in approximately 0.12s.
(a) Calculate the magnitude of the average force exerted on the egg in Trial 1.
(b) Calculate the magnitude of the average force exerted on the egg in Trial 2.
(c) The eggshell fails when the average force on the egg exceeds 20N. Predict in which trial the egg is more likely to break and justify quantitatively.
(d) Describe, without additional calculation, how moving the hands backward changes the shape of a force-versus-time graph for the catch.
