Problem

A three-step decay chain is A→B→C→A\rightarrow B\rightarrow C\rightarrow stable DD. The half-lives are T1/2(A)=3 hT_{1/2}(A)=3\,\text{h}, T1/2(B)=30 minT_{1/2}(B)=30\,\text{min} and T1/2(C)=5 minT_{1/2}(C)=5\,\text{min}. At the instant t=0t=0 there are 1.0×10181.0\times10^{18} atoms of AA and none of BB or CC. (a) Calculate the number of atoms of AA, BB and CC present after 4 h4\,\text{h}. (b) Hence find the activity of CC at t=4 ht=4\,\text{h}. (c) Determine the ratio of the activities of CC to BB at this time and comment on what this indicates about the stage reached in the decay sequence.
