Problem

During the short interaction between two blocks PP and QQ that are initially at rest on a frictionless surface, the magnitude of the force exerted by PP on QQ varies with time tt according to F(t)={6000 t0≤t≤0.005 s,6000 (0.010−t)0.005 s<t≤0.010 s,0t>0.010 s.F(t)=\begin{cases} 6000\,t & 0\le t\le 0.005\,\text{s},\\ 6000\,(0.010-t) & 0.005\,\text{s}<t\le 0.010\,\text{s},\\ 0 & t>0.010\,\text{s}.\end{cases} The positive direction is from PP toward QQ. The mass of PP is 3.0 kg3.0\,\text{kg} and the mass of QQ is 4.0 kg4.0\,\text{kg}. Neglect external forces. (i) Evaluate the impulse experienced by block QQ. (ii) What is the impulse experienced by block PP? Give its direction. (iii) Calculate the final velocities of the two blocks after the interaction. (iv) Show numerically that the total linear momentum of the isolated system remains zero both before and after the interaction.
