Problem

A horizontal mass–spring system has amplitude 12 cm12\,\text{cm} and angular frequency 5 rad s−15\,\text{rad\,s}^{-1}. The mass of the block is 0.40 kg0.40\,\text{kg}. (i) Derive an expression relating the ratio U/EU/E (potential energy to total energy) to the displacement xx in terms of the amplitude AA. (ii) Using your expression, calculate the magnitude of displacement when the kinetic energy is three times the potential energy. (iii) Determine the speed of the mass at the displacement found in part (ii).
