Problem

Compressed air in a steel cylinder is at a pressure of 1.5 atm1.5\,\text{atm} and a density of 1.80 kg m−31.80\,\text{kg\,m}^{-3}. Take γ=1.4\gamma = 1.4 for air. (i) Calculate the speed of sound in the compressed air. \newline\,(Use 1 atm=1.013×105 Pa1\,\text{atm}=1.013\times10^{5}\,\text{Pa}.) (ii) The air is allowed to expand isothermally until its pressure becomes 1.0 atm1.0\,\text{atm}. Assuming the temperature remains unchanged, determine the new speed of sound in the expanded air. (iii) Comment briefly on how the change in density affects the speed obtained in part (ii).
