Problem

Two cars sound their horns while moving on a straight road. For all calculations take the speed of sound in air as 340 m/s340\,\text{m/s}. Car X produces a sound of frequency 400 Hz400\,\text{Hz} with an amplitude of 33 arbitrary units. Car Y produces a sound whose wavelength in air is 0.50 m0.50\,\text{m} and whose amplitude is twice that of Car X. Answer the following: (a) Calculate the wavelength of the sound produced by Car X. (b) Calculate the frequency of the sound produced by Car Y. (c) State which car’s horn will be heard as shriller. Justify your answer with reference to a calculated value. (d) State which car’s horn will be louder and explain why.
