Problem

(Position – Distance and Displacement) A student is revising the basic ideas of motion. (i) Define (a) distance and (b) displacement. (ii) State the mathematical relation that always connects the magnitude of displacement with the distance travelled during any journey. Explain in two or three lines why this relation is valid. (iii) Describe one specific situation where the equality case of your relation holds, and another situation where strict inequality holds. For each case, write the actual distance covered and the magnitude of displacement.
