Problem

Two particles AA and BB, each carrying charge magnitude qq, move through the same region of uniform magnetic field B\mathbf B. Particle AA has speed vAv_{A} at an angle θA\theta_{A} to B\mathbf B; particle BB has speed vBv_{B} at an angle θB\theta_{B} to B\mathbf B. (i) Starting from the expression for magnetic force on a moving charge, show that the ratio of the magnitudes of the forces on AA and BB is FAFB=vAsin⁡θAvBsin⁡θB\dfrac{F_{A}}{F_{B}}=\dfrac{v_{A}\sin\theta_{A}}{v_{B}\sin\theta_{B}}. (ii) Given vA=4.0×105 m s−1v_{A}=4.0\times10^{5}\,\text{m s}^{-1}, vB=3.0×105 m s−1v_{B}=3.0\times10^{5}\,\text{m s}^{-1}, θA=60∘\theta_{A}=60^{\circ} and θB=45∘\theta_{B}=45^{\circ}, calculate FA/FBF_{A}/F_{B}. (iii) If the masses of the particles are mA=2mBm_{A}=2m_{B}, compare the magnitudes of their initial accelerations in the magnetic field.
