Problem

A student is investigating the meaning of magnification produced by spherical mirrors. Answer the following questions: (i) Define linear magnification for a spherical mirror and write the relation connecting it with the object distance uu and the image distance vv (symbols have their usual meaning). (ii) Using the Cartesian sign convention, explain why a negative value of magnification indicates an inverted (real) image while a positive value indicates an erect (virtual) image. (iii) An object is placed at the centre of curvature of a concave mirror. Using the concept of magnification, predict the position, size and nature of the image. Support your answer with a neat, labelled ray diagram.
