Problem

A mason lifts a 5 kg5\,\text{kg} brick from the ground to the top of a 2.5 m2.5\,\text{m} high scaffold and then, using a pulley arrangement, raises it further to a ledge 4.0 m4.0\,\text{m} above the ground. Take g=9.8 m/s2g = 9.8\,\text{m/s}^{2}. (i) Calculate the change in gravitational potential energy of the brick during the first lift. (ii) Calculate the change in gravitational potential energy during the second lift. (iii) Find the total work done by the mason against gravity in raising the brick from the ground to the ledge.
