Problem

Two identical loudspeakers S1S_1 and S2S_2 are placed 0.80 m0.80\,\text{m} apart along the xx-axis and emit coherent sound waves of frequency 400 Hz400\,\text{Hz} in phase. The speed of sound in air is 320 m s−1320\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}. A point PP lies on the line joining the speakers at a distance 2.20 m2.20\,\text{m} from S1S_1. (i) Find the wavelength of the sound produced by the speakers. (ii) Determine the path difference between the two waves reaching point PP. (iii) Calculate the corresponding phase difference at PP. (iv) State, with reason, whether constructive or destructive interference occurs at point PP.
