Problem

A monochromatic beam of light of wavelength 600 nm600\,\text{nm} in vacuum is incident normally on a glass block of refractive index 1.501.50. After emerging from the opposite face, it enters glycerine whose refractive index is 1.471.47 with respect to vacuum. (i) Compute the speed of light inside the glass block. (ii) Calculate the frequency of the light. (Take the speed of light in vacuum as 3.0×108 m s−13.0\times10^{8}\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}.) (iii) Determine the wavelength of the light inside the glass. (iv) Find the wavelength of the same light inside glycerine. (v) Comment on how the results illustrate the role of the source and the medium in fixing frequency and wavelength respectively.
