Problem

A transparent solid of unknown refractive index is surrounded by air. The critical angle for the solid–air interface is experimentally found to be 48∘48^{\circ}. (i) Calculate the refractive index of the solid. (ii) The same solid is now completely immersed in water of refractive index 1.331.33. Find the new critical angle for the solid–water interface. (iii) A light ray inside the solid is incident on the solid–water interface at an angle of 40∘40^{\circ} to the normal. State, with calculation, whether the ray will emerge into the water or suffer total internal reflection.
