A physics laboratory provides the following incomplete or partial information about four separate trials involving spherical mirrors. Assume standard sign conventions.
Trial A: Image is virtual, upright, and reduced.
Trial B: f=+15cm, object distance so=20cm, image is inverted.
Trial C: The image forms 10cm behind the mirror; no additional data recorded.
Trial D: f is negative with magnitude 12cm, object distance so=30cm, image is upright.
(a) For each trial, state whether the information provided is sufficient to determine the mirror type (concave, convex, or plane). If it is sufficient, identify the mirror type and justify your decision. If it is not sufficient, specify one additional experimentally measurable quantity that would allow the identification to be completed.
(b) Choose one trial you classified as “insufficient” in part (a). Design an experimental procedure that would obtain the missing information you proposed. Include a brief description of the measurements you would make and how the results would lead to a definitive identification of the mirror.
