Problem

On a nearly frictionless ice rink, a 0.25 kg0.25\,\text{kg} hockey puck is already sliding toward the north with constant speed when two players strike it simultaneously. Player A’s stick exerts a force of 3.0 N3.0\,\text N directed due east for 0.15 s0.15\,\text s, while Player B’s stick exerts a force of 2.0 N2.0\,\text N directed 30∘30^\circ south of west for the same time interval. Neglect any other forces during the interval. Respond to the following prompts. (a) Compute the vector sum of the two forces exerted by the players. Express your answer in terms of magnitude and direction, with the direction specified as an angle measured clockwise from due north. (b) Using the result from part (a), explain whether the puck can continue to move at constant velocity during the 0.15 s0.15\,\text s interval. Reference Newton’s first law in your reasoning. (c) Determine the magnitude and direction of the puck’s acceleration, if any, during the interval.
