A hiker starts from a campsite and moves as follows: Stage 1 – 5 km5\,\text{km} due north in 30 min30\,\text{min}. Stage 2 – 8 km8\,\text{km} due east in 1 h1\,\text{h}. He then rests for 15 min15\,\text{min}. Stage 3 – He returns to the campsite directly along a straight path in 45 min45\,\text{min}. (i) Compute the total distance travelled by the hiker. (ii) Compute the total time taken, including the rest interval. (iii) Determine the hiker’s average speed for the entire outing.
