Problem

A long solenoid produces a uniform magnetic field H=2.0×105 A m−1H=2.0\times10^{5}\,\text{A m}^{-1} inside it. A cylindrical rod of an unknown material is inserted coaxially into the solenoid. (i) The volume magnetic susceptibility of the rod is measured to be χv=3.0×10−4\chi_{v}=3.0\times10^{-4}. Calculate the magnetisation MM of the rod. (ii) Determine the magnetic flux density BB inside the rod, assuming that the external applied field HH is not appreciably altered by the presence of the rod. (iii) On the basis of the calculated value of χv\chi_{v}, state the class of magnetic material to which the rod belongs and justify your answer.
