Problem

Let θ\theta be an acute angle for which tan⁡θ=pq\tan\theta = \dfrac{p}{q}, where pp and qq are positive real numbers. (i) Express sin⁡θ\sin\theta and cos⁡θ\cos\theta separately in terms of pp and qq only. (ii) Using the expressions from part (i), verify that sin⁡2θ+cos⁡2θ=1\sin^{2}\theta + \cos^{2}\theta = 1. (iii) If p=7p = 7 and q=24q = 24, compute the numerical values of sin⁡θ\sin\theta and cos⁡θ\cos\theta, and check that they satisfy the equation obtained in part (ii).
