Problem

A car moves along a straight highway marked by kilometre stones. It starts from rest beside the stone marked 5 km5\,\text{km} (this point is taken as the origin for measurement). The driver first travels to the stone marked 12 km12\,\text{km}, then reverses and drives back to the stone marked 3 km3\,\text{km}, and finally proceeds forward to halt at the stone marked 10 km10\,\text{km}. (i) List the position of the car with respect to the origin after each of the three stages of motion. (ii) Compute the total distance covered by the car during the entire trip. (iii) Calculate the net displacement of the car from the origin to its final stopping point, clearly indicating the direction. (iv) Using numerical values from parts (ii) and (iii), verify that the displacement magnitude cannot exceed the distance travelled.
