Problem

For a real parameter kk, define the quadratic function Fk:R→RF_k:\mathbb R\to\mathbb R by Fk(x)=x2+kx+kF_k(x)=x^{2}+kx+k. (i) Express Fk(x)F_k(x) in completed-square form. (ii) Using the form obtained in part (i), find the least value of Fk(x)F_k(x) in terms of kk. (iii) Hence determine the range of FkF_k for the following cases: (a) k>−1k>-1, (b) k=−1k=-1, (c) k<−1k<-1.
