Problem

During a hiking trip, a student first walks 4.0\,km due east and then 3.0\,km due north. (a) Represent each displacement in component form taking due east as the +xx-axis and due north as the +yy-axis. (b) Add the components to obtain the resultant displacement vector in component form. (c) Calculate the magnitude of the resultant displacement. (d) Determine the direction of the resultant displacement measured as an angle north of east. (e) If the student now wants to return directly to the starting point, find the displacement (magnitude and direction) that must be taken next.
