Problem

Three coplanar forces act simultaneously on a small ring lying on a smooth horizontal surface: • Force F1\mathbf{F}_1: 10 N10\,\text{N} directed at 30∘30^{\circ} above the positive xx-axis. • Force F2\mathbf{F}_2: 6 N6\,\text{N} directed along the negative xx-axis. • Force F3\mathbf{F}_3: 8 N8\,\text{N} directed at 120∘120^{\circ} measured counter-clockwise from the positive xx-axis. Answer the following parts: (i) Write each force (F1\mathbf{F}_1, F2\mathbf{F}_2, F3\mathbf{F}_3) in unit-vector notation, stating both components with proper signs and units. (ii) Determine the net force Fnet\mathbf{F}_{\text{net}} acting on the ring, giving your answer in unit-vector form. (iii) Calculate the magnitude and direction of Fnet\mathbf{F}_{\text{net}}. Give the direction as an angle measured from the positive xx-axis, correct to the nearest degree. (iv) State, with justification based on your calculation, whether or not the ring is in mechanical equilibrium.
