Problem

A pulsed laser emits light pulses, each of energy 5.0 kJ5.0\,\text{kJ} and duration 10 ns10\,\text{ns}. During a materials-processing run the laser fires 1.0×1061.0\times10^{6} identical pulses. Use c=3.0×108 m s−1c = 3.0\times10^8\,\text{m\,s}^{-1} and 1 u=1.66×10−27 kg1\,\text{u} = 1.66\times10^{-27}\,\text{kg}. (i) Calculate the total energy delivered by all the pulses. (ii) Compute the corresponding mass decrease in the laser medium, expressing your answer: (a) in kilograms, and (b) in atomic mass units (u).
