Problem
A rectangular coil of 50 turns has length 5cm and width 3cm. It is free to rotate about a horizontal axis passing through its centre and is placed in a uniform magnetic field of 0.20T. The plane of the coil is initially held perpendicular to the field and a current of 2.0A is passed through it.
(a) Calculate the magnitude of the force acting on each of the two longer sides of the coil.
(b) Determine the torque acting on the coil about its axis in this position.
(c) What will be the value of the torque when the plane of the coil becomes parallel to the magnetic field? Give a reason for your answer.
(d) If the number of turns of the coil is doubled while all other quantities remain the same, how will the torque calculated in part (b) change?
