Problem

Two different aqueous redox reactions, Reaction A and Reaction B, are examined at constant pressure. For each reaction a separate straight-line plot of ΔG∘\Delta G^{\circ} (in kJ mol−1\text{kJ mol}^{-1}) versus ln⁡K\ln K is obtained. • Reaction A: slope = −2.60 kJ-2.60\,\text{kJ} • Reaction B: slope = −4.30 kJ-4.30\,\text{kJ} Both lines pass through the origin within experimental uncertainty. Assume ideal behavior and R=8.314 J mol−1K−1R=8.314\,\text{J mol}^{-1}\text{K}^{-1}. (a) Determine the temperature at which the equilibrium data for Reaction A were collected. (b) Determine the temperature corresponding to Reaction B. (c) Which reaction’s equilibrium constant is more sensitive to small changes in ΔG∘\Delta G^{\circ}? Support your answer using the information provided. (d) For ln⁡K=0.50\ln K = 0.50, calculate ΔG∘\Delta G^{\circ} for each reaction and identify which reaction is more thermodynamically favorable at its respective temperature.
