Problem

A continuous function pp on [−4,6][-4,6] satisfies the following conditions. • p(x)>0p(x) > 0 on (−4,−1)(-4,-1) and the area enclosed between the curve y=p(x)y=p(x), the xx-axis and the lines x=−4x=-4 and x=−1x=-1 is 99 square units. • p(x)<0p(x) < 0 on (−1,3)(-1,3) and the area enclosed between the curve, the xx-axis and the lines x=−1x=-1 and x=3x=3 is 55 square units. • p(x)>0p(x) > 0 on (3,6)(3,6) and the area enclosed between the curve, the xx-axis and the lines x=3x=3 and x=6x=6 is 44 square units. Answer the following: (i) Find the value of ∫−46p(x) dx\displaystyle \int_{-4}^{6} p(x)\,dx. (ii) Using the given information, determine ∫36p(x) dx\displaystyle \int_{3}^{6} p(x)\,dx. (iii) Compare the magnitudes ∣∫−4−1p(x) dx∣\bigl|\displaystyle \int_{-4}^{-1} p(x)\,dx\bigr| and ∣∫−13p(x) dx∣\bigl|\displaystyle \int_{-1}^{3} p(x)\,dx\bigr| and state which is larger. Give a reason for your answer.
