Problem

In a photoelectric experiment on an unknown metal, the following observations are recorded: • When light of frequency 6.0×1014 Hz6.0\times10^{14}\,\text{Hz} is used, the stopping potential is 0.50 V.0.50\,\text{V}. • When the frequency is raised to 9.0×1014 Hz9.0\times10^{14}\,\text{Hz}, the stopping potential becomes 2.00 V.2.00\,\text{V}. Assume that the charge of an electron is 1.6×10−19 C.1.6\times10^{-19}\,\text{C}. (a) Using the above data, determine the numerical value of Planck’s constant hh (in J s\text{J\,s}). (b) Calculate the work function of the metal in eV.\text{eV}. (c) Estimate the threshold frequency for the metal.
