Problem

A sample of nitrogen gas is generated and collected over water. The wet gas occupies 500. mL500.\,\text{mL} at 30∘C30^{\circ}\text{C} when the barometric pressure is 765 mmHg765\,\text{mmHg}. The vapor pressure of water at 30∘C30^{\circ}\text{C} is 31.8 mmHg31.8\,\text{mmHg}. Standard conditions are defined as 1.00 atm1.00\,\text{atm} and 0∘C0^{\circ}\text{C}. Use R=0.0821 L⋅atm⋅mol−1⋅K−1R = 0.0821\,\text{L}\cdot\text{atm}\cdot\text{mol}^{-1}\cdot\text{K}^{-1}. (a) Calculate the partial pressure (in atm) of dry nitrogen at the collection temperature. (b) Determine the number of moles of nitrogen collected. (c) Calculate the volume that this amount of nitrogen would occupy at STP.
