During the morning assembly a metal bell vibrates rapidly to produce sound that travels through the surrounding air.
(a) The bell completes 400 vibrations in 2.0 s. Find (i) the frequency and (ii) the time period of the sound produced.
(b) If the speed of sound in air is 340m/s, calculate the wavelength of the sound in air.
(c) The same bell is struck under water where the speed of sound is 1500m/s. Determine the wavelength of the sound in water, assuming the frequency remains the same.
(d) State whether the nature of the wave (longitudinal or transverse) changes when the sound travels from air to water. Give one reason for your answer.
