Problem

A tall column is completely filled with (A) water and (B) kerosene in two separate experiments. For water the bulk modulus is 2.2×109 N m−22.2\times10^{9}\,\text{N m}^{-2} and the density is 1.0×103 kg m−31.0\times10^{3}\,\text{kg m}^{-3}. For kerosene the bulk modulus is 1.6×109 N m−21.6\times10^{9}\,\text{N m}^{-2} and the density is 0.80×103 kg m−30.80\times10^{3}\,\text{kg m}^{-3}. (i) Calculate the speed of sound in each liquid. (ii) The kerosene is now compressed isothermally so that its density becomes 0.82×103 kg m−30.82\times10^{3}\,\text{kg m}^{-3} while its bulk modulus remains the same. Determine the new speed of sound in kerosene and the percentage change from the initial value.
