Problem

Two sound waves of the same frequency reach a point in air. Each has amplitude 3.0 cm3.0\,\text{cm}, and the phase difference between them is 60∘60^{\circ}. (i) Calculate the amplitude of the resultant wave at the point. (ii) Determine the phase of the resultant wave relative to the first wave. (iii) If the phase difference were changed to 180∘180^{\circ} while keeping the amplitudes unchanged, what would be the resultant amplitude? (iv) For these waves, find the ratio of the maximum possible intensity to the minimum possible intensity that can be obtained at the point by adjusting the phase difference.
