Problem

A beam of monochromatic light of wavelength 500 nm500\,\text{nm} in vacuum is incident from vacuum onto a transparent medium at an angle of 40∘40^{\circ} to the normal. Inside the medium the speed of light is measured to be 2.0×108 m s−12.0\times10^{8}\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}. (a) Determine the refractive index of the medium with respect to vacuum. (b) Calculate the angle the beam makes inside the medium. (c) Find the wavelength of the light within the medium.
