Problem

A rubber ball of mass mm is released from rest at a height hh above a rigid horizontal surface. The ball rebounds vertically to a height 0.60h0.60h. The ball is in contact with the surface for a time interval Δt\Delta t, during which the vertical force exerted by the surface on the ball can be assumed constant. Horizontal forces are negligible. (a) In terms of mm, gg, and hh, determine the speed of the ball immediately before it strikes the surface and the speed immediately after it loses contact with the surface. (b) Using your results from part (a), derive an expression for the magnitude of the change in the ball’s vertical momentum while it is in contact with the surface. (c) Hence derive an expression for the magnitude of the average vertical force exerted on the ball by the surface during contact, in terms of mm, gg, hh, Δt\Delta t, and numerical coefficients. (d) For a ball of mass 0.080 kg0.080\,\text{kg} dropped from 2.5 m2.5\,\text{m} that remains in contact with the surface for 8.0 ms8.0\,\text{ms}, calculate the magnitude of the average vertical force exerted on the ball.
