Problem

A cricket ball of mass 0.15 kg0.15\,\text{kg} moving horizontally at 25 m s−125\,\text{m\,s}^{-1} is caught and brought to rest by a fielder. (a) Calculate the magnitude of the impulse imparted to the ball by the fielder. (b) If the ball is stopped in 0.50 s0.50\,\text{s}, find the magnitude of the average force exerted on the ball. (c) The fielder now pulls his hands backward so that the ball is stopped in 1.0 s1.0\,\text{s}. Determine the new average force on the ball. (d) Show that the work done by the fielder on the ball in both cases is the same and relate this value to the initial kinetic energy of the ball.
