Problem

The nucleus of the helium isotope 4 ⁣He^4\!\mathrm{He} has Z=2Z=2 and N=2N=2. The following nuclear masses are provided: mp=1.00727 u\mathrm{m_p}=1.00727\,\text{u}, mn=1.00866 u\mathrm{m_n}=1.00866\,\text{u}, mass of 4 ⁣He^4\!\mathrm{He} nucleus =4.00150 u=4.00150\,\text{u}, 1 u=1.6605×10−27 kg=931.5 MeV/c21\,\text{u}=1.6605\times10^{-27}\,\text{kg}=931.5\,\text{MeV}/c^{2}. (i) Calculate the mass defect of the 4 ⁣He^4\!\mathrm{He} nucleus in atomic mass units (u). (ii) Determine the binding energy of the nucleus in (a) joule and (b) mega-electron-volt (MeV). (iii) Find the binding energy per nucleon in MeV for 4 ⁣He^4\!\mathrm{He}.
