Problem

A thin, square metallic plate is mounted in an evacuated chamber so that only one of its faces can radiate energy. The plate is assumed to behave as an ideal black surface. (i) The side of the plate is 10 cm10\,\text{cm} and its temperature is raised uniformly to 800 K800\,\text{K}. Calculate the radiant power emitted per unit area from the exposed face. Take σ=5.67×10−8 W m−2K−4\sigma = 5.67\times10^{-8}\,\text{W m}^{-2}\text{K}^{-4}. (Use scientific notation in your working.) (ii) How much thermal energy (in joules) will be emitted from the exposed face in the first 5 s5\,\text{s} at this temperature, assuming the temperature remains constant during this short interval?
