Problem

A loudspeaker fixed at one end of a long corridor emits a steady sound of frequency 1.7 kHz1.7\,\text{kHz}. The speed of sound in air may be taken as 340 m s−1340\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1}. Answer the following questions: (a) Calculate the wavelength of the sound produced. (b) How much time elapses between the arrival of successive compressions at a point in the corridor? (c) The corridor is 68 m68\,\text{m} long. Estimate the time taken by the sound wave to travel from the loudspeaker to the far end. (d) If the frequency of the loudspeaker is gradually increased to 2.55 kHz2.55\,\text{kHz} while the speed of sound remains unchanged, determine the new wavelength.
