Problem
A bright star in the constellation Orion shows a peak intensity at a wavelength of 290 nm. Another star in the same field has a known surface temperature of 7250 K. Use b=2.9×10−3mK.
(i) Calculate the surface temperature of the first star.
(ii) Determine the ratio of the wavelengths corresponding to maximum emission for the two stars.
(iii) Comment on the relative colours of the two stars based on your result in part (ii).
