Problem

A student walks 200 m200\,\text{m} due east from his home to a kiosk, then immediately walks 120 m120\,\text{m} due west before stopping. (i) Calculate the total distance travelled and the magnitude of the displacement from the starting point. (ii) If the entire walk takes 5 min5\,\text{min}, find the average speed and the average velocity (magnitude and direction). (iii) Could the instantaneous speed of the student be zero at the turning point? Justify your answer. (iv) Identify which of the quantities distance, displacement, speed and velocity are scalars and which are vectors, giving one reason for each identification.
