Problem

Rahul starts from corner A of a rectangular park ABCD where AB = 60 m and BC = 40 m. He walks along the boundary in the order A → B → C → D → A. (i) If Rahul stops at corner C after taking 55 s to move from A to B and 35 s from B to C, calculate (a) the total distance covered and (b) the magnitude of the displacement from A to C. (ii) Using your answers from part (i), find Rahul’s average speed and the magnitude of his average velocity for the motion from A to C. (iii) Rahul now completes the entire round trip back to A in a total time of 100 s. Determine his average speed and average velocity for the complete trip. (iv) From your results, state and prove the general condition under which the numerical value of average speed equals the magnitude of average velocity for any motion.
