Problem

Let nn be a natural number greater than 1. Define the sets A={1,2,3,…,n}A = \{1,2,3,\ldots, n\} and B={1,2,3,…,n}B = \{1,2,3,\ldots, n\}. Consider the subset SS of A×BA \times B given by S={(a,b)∈A×B∣a>b}S = \{ (a,b) \in A \times B \mid a > b \}. (i) Prove that ∣S∣=n(n−1)2|S| = \frac{n(n-1)}{2}. (ii) For n=50n = 50, calculate ∣S∣|S| and ∣A×B∣|A \times B|. (iii) For general nn, express the ratio ∣S∣:∣A×B∣|S| : |A \times B| in its simplest form and state what this ratio approaches as nn becomes very large.
