Problem

A copper wire 1.2 m1.2\,\text{m} long has a linear mass density of 6.0 g m−16.0\,\text{g\,m}^{-1}. It is stretched between two fixed supports. A tuning fork of frequency 300 Hz300\,\text{Hz} sets the wire into resonance corresponding to its third harmonic. (i) Calculate the speed of transverse waves on the wire when it is resonating with the fork. (ii) Determine the tension that must be applied to the wire for this resonance to occur.
